On Tuesday the 15th of April, unfortunately we had or last ever DICE conference called ‘GET DIGITAL’ held in DCU Hellix. The day started with the presentation of our research posters, plotting the further development of our project – mobile apps. The project was based on areas all over Ireland in which we had to make an app on in order to attract tourists. Information such as – Accommodation, Attractions, Activities, Night-life, Restaurants, History and images of the area itself. My groups (Group 82) app was based on Greystones. The app went really well and I had great fun doing it, it was something different!! We presented the poster on this day to three different judges. I felt it went relly well and they all seemed really interested in our app/poster. Even one judge added Greystones was a favourite place of in Ireland!! They loved our target audience in which was International Students coming to Ireland. They thought it as unique. Overall presentation went super!!

After all presentations were done, we then attended the conference ‘Get Digital’ at 4pm in which was was to deal with the development of cloud technology. I was excited as I gained an interest in this after doing some work on the app.

The first speaker to speak was Clare Dillon who offered us insights in the ‘Megatrend’ that is cloud computing. She talked to us about how cloud is growing and growing everyday. She gave us interesting facts such as $98.4 billion is earned in revenue from this technology every single year. I was astonished at this figure, as I didn’t think cloud apps was this profitable. She told us Skype is used for 8 billion minutes per day across the world, figures which are hard for me to believe!! it just shoes how much this technology is used all over the world. ‘A computer in every pot and chicken’, this quote really stood out to me as it tells the developments and expansion of computing today

The second speaker was Paolo Malinvero from Gartner and he talked to us on the realities of cloud computing in all of Europe. He is explained the main thing of what people actually want from cloud. I found alot of things he mentioned related to our own app that we created and this made me eager to know more about what he was saying. ‘Cloud is about Critical Mass’ – a quote that paola said
as Cloud computing is having a profound impact on society.
He told us the advantages this has for customers – how Cloud computing has evolved in recent years. That The new world of the hybrid cloud is an environment that employs both private and public cloud services. Companies are realizing that they need many different types of cloud services in order to meet a variety of customer needs. He also explained some challenges faced when upgrading to Cloud, in which I found interesting as I will know what I am up against when using it.

Davin Cody then was next to speak to us. He talked to us about Hybrid Cloud. He told us the advantages this has for customers – how Cloud computing has evolved in recent years. That The new world of the hybrid cloud is an environment that employs both private and public cloud services. Companies are realizing that they need many different types of cloud services in order to meet a variety of customer needs.  Up next was Allister Croll talked to us about ‘Lean Start Up‘ based on the book by Eric Ries. The book is about ‘How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses’. He believed a sustainable business model was a key to a success of a business. He said that a business plan is very important in order to reduce the risk of failure. How using the right skills are vitally important. Communication skills – You need me a good listener if setting up your own business, listen to other peoples mistakes and don’t make them your the same. Feedback, feedback, feedback was a word that I got from his talk. You should always listen to customer feedback in order to improve,he is so right!! As they say customers are your business. I really liked Allister talk as I felt he was a man of wise words. He pointed out simple but not so obvious points of setting up your own business.

Last but not least, Julie Sinnamon from Enterprise Ireland talked to us about innovative Irish companies and why Enterprise Ireland is eager to invest in them. She told us how Irish exports add up to 16.2 billion euro and that there is a 19% growth in the software sector. I was shocked at these figures. She talked about how there were links with the DCU graduates and how they helped them in their line of work. I loved how they showed an interests in the graduates of college. In addition to working with a portfolio of companies across a wide range of sectors, Julie has taken a specific interest in Enterprise Ireland’s Strategy for Female Entrepreneurship. I was delighted to see that someone had interest in woman as entrepreneurs.

Overall I had a great time at the conference ‘Get Digital’ – it gave me a lot more knowledge about Cloud Computing that I never knew. I may even look more further into this type of technology as it was at great interest to me, as I enjoyed every speaker.

When I first began my module DICE, I didn’t fully understand why we were doing it. Now as we are at the end, I have a completely different view on it. I have learned a lot of knowledge from the four conferences of DICE. It has made me gain a lot more knowledge in different areas of technology.  I believe that all speakers really translated their passion for social media and technology in their presentations and the use of social media for marketing is definitely something that I would consider learning more about.

GET STARTED!!

On Tuesday the 18th of February,I attended my third Techspectations mini-conference called #GetStarted held in The Helix in Dublin City University, in which was hosted by Darren Ryan who also talk about Enterprise Ireland. There were many different guest speakers who shared their personal experience of starting a business. It featured many talks from a number of successful entrepreneurs, including Bobby who shared their experiences of starting their own business. Personally this one was definitely my favourite conference so far as I find I have an great interest in ‘Entrepreneurship’.

Image

The first question we were introduced with was:

‘For what reason did we want to be an entrepreneur? To make a profit or to make a difference?’

This question instantly made me think about why did people become an entrepreneur, was it really just for the money? Well it was at this conference I realised that there is entrepreneurs out there that re not just in it for the money, these were know a ‘Social Entrepreneurs’. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems, they focus on making a change and a difference regardless of a profit.

Many Social Entrepreneurs came to the conference to tell us about their personal experience in this area. The first speaker was Daithí de Buitléir a Social Entrepreneur from RAG (Raising and Giving Ireland). His story instantly grabbed my attention. He focuses on the future of students today in which also refers to me. A powerful quote of Daithí de Buitléir that stuck with me was:

‘Young people can bring about transformative change in Ireland if they are properly supported’

He is so right!! He shared to us about his time as a student at DCU too and how he spent his time partying and living the college life but one day he wanted to make a difference to his country, he wanted to volunteer!! He told us of how he was sick of using the traditional methods of raising money to give to charities such as Cake sales or Bag packing, so he set up a RAG society here in DCU to try more unique and fun ways to raise the money, such as fun runs, charity boxing matches, including their very own Dragons Den.

The second speaker was Second was Isuelt Ward the Co-Founder and CEO of Foodcloud, a start-up with ta goal to minimize the wasting of food and instead of it being disposed, it was given to charities around the area. She told us facts the I was astonished by! 13,000 heals of bread are wasted a day. One quarter of the food wastage could feed 1.4 billion people!!! I couldn’t believe this amount of wastage could actually feed that amount of people and to think that there is actually people starving in Africa!!!! Food Cloud started off with bread, and at Christmas time over 800 boxes of Lily O’Brien’s chocolate were given to people because they could not sell these boxes. Also 3.6 tonnes of food go to 55 charities, this was 9000 meals. Food Clouds vision was a great way of reducing food waste, they aim to have NO food waste in Ireland one day.

The next speaker was Sean Coughlan, who set up Social Entrepreneur Ireland. He gave us a rough guide on how to make money and make a difference. He told us of how his company has helped to set up many Social Entrepreneurial projects such as Neuro Hero, an app to support people living with speech and language difficulties that often follow stroke and brain injury.

The next part of the conference was 5 entrepreneurs who took to the stage for another round of questions and answers. The panel consisted of Lulu O’Sullivan of Giftsdirect.com, Seán Aherne of Thankfrank.com, Karl Tyrrell of Travelpaths.ie, Kim of Colily.com and Simon Geraghty of Dotdash.ie. This was my favourite part of the conference as it made me see a real insight to what being an entrepreneur is. It not only made me see the good aspects of the job but the bad aspect also. They mentioned good tips to remember if i will ever be an entrepreneur.

The last but definitely not least was Chairman of Insomnia Coffee Bobby Kerr, yes the main man who was on Dragons Den!!  He caught all of our attention with his humour at the beginning of his talk with his quite funny jokes. One thing Bobby said that will always stick with me was:

‘You will learn more from your mistakes than from your achievements’

It really made me think into what he said, I loved and told family and friends that exact quote when I got home. Insomnia sells 10 millions cups of coffee annually, its amazing how much coffee is actually bought. He has over 300 staff in 80 shops with a turnover of 26 million. Bobby has many strategies to have him where he is today. He has linked up with shops such as Spar and Mace, he even has one on the campus of DCU (where I get me fine Latte every morning). Insomnia is 100% fair trade and organic as its what he believes in. He was an inspiration to look up to as an entrepreneur!!

Overall my time at this conference was very worthwhile, it made me wonder

“Could I potentially be an entrepreneur in five years time ?”

Get Social 2013!!!

Image

On the 15th of October 2013 I attended a mini conference in the The Helix’s Mahony Hall in DCU called ‘Get Social 2013’ presented by Darragh Doyle. This event was run by DCU Business School and Techspectations to tell us about the internet and the social side of it. The conference included many different speakers from Microsoft, Edelmen Ireland, Marketto and Aertv. When we were told about this event, I did not think it would be at any interest to me… but I was wrong

Facebook – What’s on your Mind?

This was a video shown to us created by Niall Farrell and Niall Spolle. I found this video extremely interesting, it opened my eyes to see what ‘facebook’ is actually really about. It allowed me to see the positive and negative effects it has on us as users as over half the population have a facebook account. Yes facebook is great – Its a website where you can socialize with friends, get the latest gossip, keep up with new trends, share photos or to even to keep in touch with distant family and friends! But we never seem to look at the down falls of Facebook as a ‘Social Networking Site’ and thats what this video did. Facebook is a place where cyber bullying occurs, Its where young teens and adults personal information becomes invaded by hundreds/thousands of strangers. Its mad to think that the photos and posts you share can actually be viewed by people all over the world. I think this video could show others the real reason for social media sites and maybe stop them from being misused!!

Edelman Trust Barometer 2013

Joe Carmody, Director of Corporate Communications, Edelman Ireland focus on who and what the public trust. This was the first time I actually asked myself.. Who do I have trust in?? – The Diamond of Influence. I was surprised to hear that banks are the least trusted in Ireland than anything else with 14%. Big difference compared to Media with 64%. This information shows how banks have portrayed the public in which brings down the amount of trust we have in them. Media on the other hand has obviously kept a steady relationship with the public in which increased the trust we have for them. Overall, I learned alot from this talk, that trust is a main key a business needs in order to succeed and also not to trust banks!!!

Why Buy an Ad When You Can Own the Whole Channel?

Philippe Brodeur, Director of Aertv talked to us about social tv and the online television for free. He believes that 70-85% of data traffic to mobiles will be video by 2017. I could not believe that this could happen in 3 years!!

One thing that Phillippe said that stuck with me was:

‘Everyone has a strategy until you get punched in the face.’

This basically says it all in the sentence. Even the best strategists have to be prepared for the unexpected!!

Microsoft- Monitoring the internet

What is Social CRM? Microsoft basically find out the views of dissatisfied customers on social media, where comments were gathered by Global Tour Operators. I found this talk really interesting as it showed how companies can incorporate what people say on social media into their businesses. When you think about it has a domino effect – if you hear bad comments about a product or service you will think twice about using it, its crazy really!! We are influenced by what others say and do and we realise it. What the public say can effect a business and their image. As we heard in the Marketo talk from Elizabeth – Best type of advertising is ‘Word of Mouth’. It can lead to a social crises in which is growing year by year. For example the ‘Disgusting Dominoes’ video completely brought bad publicity on dominoes. It ranked in google/youtube rankings for years! Now I that the worker in that video is definitley one of the biggest idiots in the world for putting that up but it just shows these things happen!!

  • Overall I really enjoyed this mini conference and loved every talk. I have learned how important the internet actually is and how careful you need to be when using it. I have learned alot more about social media and marketing that I never knew!

‘Get Social 2013’ was a really big success and should definitley continue on in the future! I am looking forward to whats coming next.
